The Theatre Project, as the group has come to be known, is a standing committee of the South Cobb Arts Alliance, a non-profit organization founded by artist of Cobb County , Georgia in 1972. The Theatre Project formed, in the summer of 2006, as a repertory group of all ages dedicated to learning and performing live theatre for family and adult audiences.
Our mission at The Theatre Project is simple one: We seek to fulfill a need in our community to educate our community to all aspects of the performance and production of live theatre and to nurture the love of live theatre in persons of all ages.
What does that mean? Well, quite simply, The Theatre Project is all about MEAT : Mentoring, Education, And Theatre. Offering classes for as young as four years old and performance opportunities for the most seasoned of actors in our 2,400 seat amphitheatre, The Theatre Project truly has something for everyone.
The Theatre Project sponsors five ongoing programs:
The SHINBUSTERS
This group is open to actors in 3 – 5 years old. This program strictly focuses on beginning theatre concepts, theatre games, and confidence building… in short, we strive to get our youngest actors used to being in front of people. We achieve this classes held in the Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters and Summer Camps. Although this program is mainly classroom based, our little actors showcase what they have learned at the conclusion of each camp/class… for those enrolled in Fall and Winter classes, they will have the chance to perform is a very special pre-show event on the opening night of the Footlights performance at the Mable House/Barnes Amphitheatre. (Enrollment is on a registration basis).
The LIMELIGHTS
This group is very similar to the Shinbusters, but for our young actors in 1 st – 3 rd grades. The Limelights' classes and camps will dive in a little bit deeper, exploring more involved performance concepts, team building, and script work. Again, the Limelights enrollment is based on registration for year around camps and classes and its major focus is in the classroom… but those enrolled in the Fall and Winters session will take part in the special pre-show event on the opening night of the Footlights performance at the Mable House/Barnes Amphitheatre just like the Shinbusters!
The FOOTLIGHTS
This is our main performance based children's theatre group for 3 rd through 9 th graders! This group now has four times to take stage each year. Admission is by registration not audition. Each Fall and Spring, The Theatre Project sponsors a production at The Mable House/Barnes Amphitheatre that includes approximately 35 to 40 participants. The performances usually occur in early-November and mid-April, respectively. A professional director, who has experience with children's theatre, is hired for each production. In addition, there is an adult producer, stage manager and technical director. Many tasks such as make-up, costumes, set-building, tickets, concessions, and many more, are carried out by parent volunteers and Theatre Project members. In the summer The Footlights are also offered a “Summer Stock Experience” where they will have three weeks to fully produce and perform a play. This program is held twice, the first three full weeks of June and the last three full weeks of July. All levels of experience are welcome in this group and many participants are going on stage for the first time.
The SPOTLIGHTS
This group is a chance for our adult members, parents, and staff to get into the act. The Spotlights is an audition only community theatre organization for High School students and Adults. This very diverse group produces four shows a year in a variety of different locations and styles. From readers theatre in an intimate setting, to classics set outside on the grounds of the historic Mable House, or more contemporary plays fully produced on the Mable House/Barnes Amphitheatre stage. The Spotlights strive for challenges and excellence! Come join the fun! No experience is needed… even with our adults education is the number one focus of The Theatre Project.
